Day #7

1400UTC Monday December 9 2013

15* 00.6'N 36*31.2'W

Nearly 24 hours of no wind for us. Motored for much of it just puttering along headed west, 118nm since yesterday noon. We have about 1,450 nm to go yet.Yesterday morning the gas stove stopped working. it turned out to be a loose/corroded connection to the solenoid valve and was a pretty easy fix. We had fresh bread for lunch, a lovely mussels and mushroom pasta for dinner, and ended the evening in the cockpit with a highly competitive game of Hearts. We are hopeful for wind this evening or tomorrow, and spirits are high. So ends another good 24 hours. - Christopher

On a hot day in the middle of the Atlantic we are motoring a lot. In a few minutes we will be deep sea swimming. Which out here is no land for miles and miles around. I am mostly excited to swim but a bit nervous. The boat can't be anchored and will be just drifting. It is going to be fun! -Jack

It is great to be able to read, it passes the time faster. I couldn't read earlier because I was getting seasick. Now I have gotten over my seasickness and it is pretty calm. - Porter

At the moment I am winning in hearts. Brilliant trip thus far, 180 degree difference from my first transatlantic crossing in 1973. Lots of Love - Mary

Yesterday afternoon, The Rabbit was a little bored so he got on the radio and said "This is Sailing Vessel Sila calling. I am Jack. Are there any English speaking kids in earshot?" After a second try, a 25-year old Frenchman responded and the two of them engaged in a 20 minute conversation about the nature of the crew on each boat, where we were each from and headed, the weather, and ways to entertain ourselves on passage. We could occasionally hear laughter from other people on Amaya as the 9-year old entertained them and us. Our passages to the Cannaries and to the Cape Verdes were much shorter. It is nice that this trip is not over yet, now that we are all getting our sea legs and settling into some comfortable routines. Now if we could just have the same wind we had on those first two! -Molly

  1. Love the updates. Sitting here under awful fluorescent lights with a great visual (accurate or not). Be safe, love you all.
