Noontime daily run was 170nm... this is trade wind sailing...including the o'dark thirty squalls and all. Piped up to the low thirties this am for a little adventure with furling a Genoa that jammed... all resolved with some patience and no damage done. Rain was refreshing and great to rinse off the salt from Sila and the crew. Two nights ago, Porter was on watch with me in the dark and suddenly jumped below for pen and paper to draft a poem that came to mind for him (see separate post.)
From the logbook early this morning by Molly on her midnight to 4am watch:
0255 "Seriously?! I just got hit in the backside of the head by a 10 inch flying fish. 10 inches. The thing was HUGE! Then it flopped around the cockpit until I could catch it and toss it overboard. YUCK!"
0320 We are taking heavy fire form flying fish. Six have landed on deck in the last 10 minutes. As far as I can tell - all have returned to the sea.
As you can see, things are getting interesting. The length of the voyage is affecting theatrics. Antigua over the horizon, closing in, fair winds. - Mary
Dear Christopher, Molly, Porter, Jack, and Mary: It's snowing outside my window in NYC while I try to envision a huge flying fish hitting the back of Molly's head somewhere in the middle of the night in the middle Atlantic. What an image! I trust the crew is not longing for snow but perhaps a touch for the shores of Antigua. I know I am. May the winds continue to cooperate for a Caribbean Christmas. XO, Nicholas.
ReplyDeleteHey, what about fried Flying Fish sandwiches on fresh bred? I've had one and they're great!! Don't forget your cockpit battle armor....
