Under an Arch (Rapa Nui Bound for Puerto Montt, Day 13)

Under an Arch

The wind rises
the sails flog
she flies off course-
I take the helm

100 yards away-
and moving closer-
the rain hits us

water runs
the sun shines-
ignoring the pour-
brighter and brighter

it bursts
from the horizon-
an awe-inspiring arch-
brilliant and flawless.
Sila escapes the squall
and sails- through the rainbow

I was inspired to write this poem about the evening squalls we have had on this passage. Many have landed on my watch or during the dinner hour. After every one, there has been a brilliant rainbow. They are the brightest and fullest rainbows I have ever seen. They stretch from horizon to horizon, burning away every cloud that tried to cover it.It always appears that we are going to sail right under it. The rainbow always fades away just before the sun sets spectacularly.

  1. Chasing rainbows sounds pretty fun! I hope you have some pictures to share when you reach land.
