The Dollar

The Dollar  -Jack Rabbit

I slip into the turquoise water
With me
My mask
My flippers
My spirit

At the sea floor
Four meters below
There are waves of patterned sand
No weeds
No grass
No coral

I fill my lungs full
And glide under the rippled surface
I gently kick towards the mellow ground
Lying over the patterns
A surprise

A round, white sand dollar
My hands close around it
I slowly kick towards the sky
Ten seconds seem like long moments
I break the ocean surface
My breath no longer held

I look at the sea dollar
Turning it over
I realize it is alive

It falls like a leaf to the bottom
It lands in the sand
Sending up a small cloud
I do not blink

Off the Bahamian shore
I found a memory
A moment
A sand dollar
