Trumpet Fish

I want to mention a highlight from a few nights ago: the Trumpet fish. Porter and I got out a powerful light. We shined it down on the water, which attracts little fish. Normally, those fish eaten get eaten by minnows. All different fish come for food. But this time, before the minnows and big fish came, Trumpet Fish appeared near the light.

Trumpet Fish are about one foot long and one inch around. They are greenish blue with long snouts that rarely open. They have two small fins and a tail. They wriggle through the water at amazing speed. Now on the outskirts of the light, five, no six, no ten, no! Twenty trumpet fish swam in place. I called Mama and Daddy. When they were on deck there was a moment of astonished silence. Then more Trumpet fish showed up.

We all had a turn pointing the light. Apparently the long skinny creatures like the outside edge of the light more than the inside. When one of the four of us pointed the beam on the fish, they would dart away. After two or three minutes, the Trumpet fish started leaving. With used the light to herd them closer to Sila. By now they were going crazy. The snouts of the fish open like a trumpet at the tip. Two Trumpet fish snouts touched like a kiss by accident. Then it was pandemonium for the fish. They went crazy, bolting around. Some even jumped out of the water. We could no longer herd the fish into a group but we had had our fun. We saw cool fish play around. The Trumpet fish made for a great highlight. – Jack Rabbit

  1. It seems like herding fish is easier than herding cats!
