The Squid

On our passage to the Cape Verdes, the waves would drench the foredeck. This would sometimes bring fish and squid onto the deck. Flying fish sometimes fluttered on deck, too. A squid got washed onto the foredeck and stuck to one of the hatches. It was small and had two tentacles sticking out behind it. I clipped in to the jack line and walked up to the foredeck. I picked up the squid. It felt slimy. Its huge eye glared up at me even though the squid was dead. In the picture I drew, I am down below under the hatch, looking up at the five to six inch long squid. Daddy took a few pictures. The smell was then getting to us so we chucked it overboard. I think it is amazing what I will see and have seen. –Jack Rabbit
