My hand closed around the cool surface of the shell. I twist
and race to the top. Just as I break the surface the shell escapes my grasp and
sinks away. I lunged for it but my goggles were fogged and I couldn't see a
thing. I tore off my mask and searched desperately but it had slipped away,
gone.
From where I was swimming, I could see the algae-covered
steps just below where Mama was standing. The quay was cement and parts of it
shined with water. Together, the black rocks with the huge waves crashing behind
Mama completed the awe-inspiring scene. I was about to tell her how awesome she
looked when she called "Wrap it up. Time to go. The cab will be here in
five minutes."
I quickly cleaned and put my mask back on. I dove back down
and found the shell lying there, its white speckles flashed at me, as if
laughing. I smiled as my hand closed
over it. I had it. I had been looking for this treasure for almost an hour.
Suddenly a fish bolted surprising me into dropping the shell. In a moment of
horror I realized I was floating up and away, away from an hour of searching.
Just then I realized I should swim down. With a single kick I grabbed it again.
I turned, somehow knowing that I wouldn't drop the shell this time. I swam
toward the surface leaping, getting my waist out of the water. I held my shell
high above me. My trophy, my lost treasure was found. –Porter
