Snack, Dessert and Breakfast

I was sitting precariously on the edge of a rock. Below me was the side of a blackberry bush that most people could not reach. The berries were very dense on this side and I was reaching out to get them. I suddenly found myself half lying in the thorny bush. After ten minutes and dozens of delicious berries and scratches, I emerged with purple fingers, tongue, and mouth. The scrapes on my leg were worth the afternoon snack.

At the end of the walk, Mama suggested that we go and pick more for dessert that night. Rabbit and I set out with a two liter container to fill. Our initial lack of berries ended when we found a bush with so many berries that it occupied us for the better part of an hour. We cleaved a path through the patch, picking our way to the places with the most berries. When we turned around to leave, we found that the branches had sprung back and we had to push through the thorns again. After rinsing our hands and removing a dozen thorns, we set out again.

Rabbit was master of the expedition from there on. He raced about finding little treasure troves, picking from all sorts of awkward positions to get the maximum number of berries. I replaced him when there were a few berries beyond his reach. Finally, we filled up the container and returned to the boat for dinner. We sacrificed a good portion of the feeling in our finger tips, by getting poked by thorns repeatedly, for the berries.
When we returned to the boat, Mama filled up a homemade pie crust and sent it into the oven. After dinner, we beat the whip cream. Dessert was ready. It was an outstanding dessert. We put some sugar on the leftover berries and let them sit overnight. In the morning, there was a nice berry syrup to go with our french toast and blackberries. Breakfast was an exceptional meal. All and all, it was worth every scrape for the snack, dessert, and breakfast. -Porter

I think it is funny that Jack and I are wearing the same shirts for dessert one night and
then for breakfast the next day!
