The Changing Vast Blue Sea

The Changing Vast Blue Sea - Jack Rabbit

I look out on the vast blue sea
And realize how great it is
Thousands of miles of just rolling waves
That stretch into the abyss

A sudden memory strikes in my mind
Of all twenty days before
When I sat, simply gazing, out over the ocean
Seeming forever more

Each day the broad view stays the same
A changing deep blue-grey
Never ending rolling waves
Through all night and day

But up close it's a different case
And the sea is never the same
Sometimes a glimmer or a beautiful blue
Or a grey where the clouds are to blame

The sea holds many wavy shapes
And colors with different shades
I think of it as a changing mass
Where many wonders are to be made

Ed. Note: The Rabbit wrote this poem on Wednesday, March 18- day 23 of this passage. While he was working on it, we had a great conversation about our observation that at once the view of the ocean is exactly the same as the day before and yet also very different from moment to moment. As of the end of the day Wednesday, our odometer reads 21,000 nautical miles. We have sailed just over 4,000 miles since leaving South Georgia and hope to arrive at Ascension Island (07°55.16'S 14°24.8'W) early on Friday morning. We plan to take a short break in Ascension to reload on diesel and water before pressing onward to the Cape Verde islands. And we are hoping we might even find some fresh fruit to buy.
