The Caw of the Jackass by Jack Rabbit Barnes

A couple of days ago, we went for an evening walk near Gypsy Cove in the Falkland Islands. Seeing and hearing the penguins there inspired this poem:

The caw of the jackass
Is what I just heard
Not coming from donkey
But coming from bird
The sound was mocking
And quite broken up
Heh..heh..heh..heeehh
Like a run-on hiccup

I would never have thought
That this strange, strange sound thus
Would come from the penguin
That stood feet from us

About two feet tall
Standing up right
Little beak twitching
A comical sight
White was the belly
And on its necktie
Black was the rest
But red was the eye

Its was all hunched over
As it examined me
Head twisting to sides
Contemplating his see

Then he stretched out his neck
To point at the cloud
Beak opened wide
To caw clear and loud

Again laugh gripped me
As the funny caw went
The penguin not knowing
What fun the call sent

Magellanic's the kind
Of penguin we saw
The creature that gave me
Two cracked ribs and some awe

Two Magellanic penguins, standing on a rock
Me with the same two Magellanic penguins standing on rock!
 Two babies with their mom
This is me and Adam, our newest crew member on Sila, with a penguin that you can just see on the left side.
With not a care in the world...
This guy was examining me, tilting his head back and forth
 The Jackass penguin cawing: Heh..heh..heh..heeehh
