My Mixed Emotions

January 2nd was the day we left Puerto Williams for good. It was also our last day in Chile. That day I had mixed emotions. I know it sounds like I'm writing to a diary where I pour out all my feelings and emotions, but there are no other words for it. I had mixed emotions. I am sad to leave Chile but excited about the passages to come and the adventures in the Falklands and in South Georgia, if we get to go there too.

I loved many things about our time in Chile. I liked sailing and hiking and -well I guess I should start at the beginning, way back to Easter Island. The Moai were cool. Puerto Montt was very fun too with all the running around on the marina docks and visiting the city. Sailing through rainy, windy fjords is something I will miss, amazingly. (Though I was down below for  98% of the time when it rained and the wind howled.) The many sunsets, mountains, birds, and rainbows were stunningly beautiful. I will never forget sailing by the glaciers and ice floes. Big Jack was fun as well. Playing games, talking, and especially hiking, are things that Big Jack was willing to do with us. I am sure that the wildlife is plentiful and interesting in other places, but the Chilean birds, dolphins, and sea lions will be hard to beat. Discovering and watching this interesting wildlife, I will miss. But, I will miss some of the things in Puerto Williams, even more. The Optimist sailing lessons twice a day, were really fun, and that doesn't even count all the friends I made at the sailing school or how much I practiced my Spanish, something I will not get  to do for a while. It was very sad leaving Chile.

But, I am also very exited. We are going to the Falklands and maybe to South Georgia, places that are hopefully going to be fun. I do not know what the next few weeks are going to be like, but they will most certainly be interesting and new. In South Georgia there are supposedly new animals to discover. They do not have a wide variety of animals but the animals they do have are cool and interesting. They are king penguins, elephant seals, albatrosses, and whales. And there are more glaciers. I do not know that much about the Falklands, a part of the United Kingdom, but they sound interesting enough because people we have met have spoken highly of them. We have ended a great chapter of sailing. We have moved from Chile and now we are on to a different part of this adventure on Sila. - Jack Rabbit

  1. I understand your mixed emotions about leaving Chile because you guys posted about and wrote about so many wonderful adventures there. I especially liked finding your anchorages on Google Earth. On to the Falklands/Malvinas!
