A few days ago, we sailed overnight from Samana Cay to San
Salvador, two islands in the Bahamas. It was Daddy's watch and I was on deck
with him. My time with him while Mama and Porter slept inspired me to write
this poem.
When the Moon Shines Strong
By Jack Rabbit Barnes
The creak of the boom
The slosh of our wake
The note of the wind
Is what I intake
But the moon is the best
Above in the sky
Shining a shadow
Of silvery dye
Its light is strong
Yes, strong and so bright
My sight is as keen
In day as tonight
But Sila sailing
Does not even slow
To watch the vast ocean
In a beautiful glow
Oh, the moon on high
Sends its big spotlight
On us and reflects
A radiant light
The moon is not full
But still shines its share
I can still see the stars
Caught in my stare
Orion, the Twins,
Seven Sisters too
I can make them out
Through the glow of the moon
I love this sail
The stars and the sea
The orb in the sky
Strikes a fire in me
I look up at the night
And nothing seems wrong
The beauty is great
When the moon shines strong
