Half buried in the sand
A friendship bracelet
Just where the waves turn back
The orange and blue
Just barely visible
It caught my eye
And later
It caught my mind
Holding it and looking
At more than string
Who did it belong to?
Were there two friends
Best friends
Who tied one on the other's wrist
And swore to always
Care for each other
Did they have a fight?
Did they disagree?
And was this thrown away in anger?
Did someone comb the beach,
Searching for the remnant
Of a friend?
Or did time pass
And the friends draw apart?
And the bracelet slip from a wrist?
Not noticed
Until later
When the loss is regretted.
Or just forgotten.
Looking at the string
I see more
But what I see
I do not know
When I found the bracelet, I spent over an hour thinking about it. Having thought about the string and stared at the complex sinnet, I started to see possible stories. I eventually decided to write a poem about how it took on that meaning. I wrote three different poems, two of which did not express my thoughts the same way this one does. Even now, over a week later, I am still wondering about the bracelet, which I see on a daily basis, and its story.-Porter
