Copeland Island

A couple of days ago, we went ashore on a beautiful island in Ireland, Copeland Island. It was small and had only seven houses. It was almost completely treeless, and home to sheep, rabbits, and nesting seabirds. We went for a nice hour long walk around the entire island. On one side, there were hundreds of seagulls. They swooped around, dive bombing each other, presumably defending the chicks running around on the ground.

At the beginning of the walk, we had been invited to tea at an islander's house. After our delightful walk, we went to their house where they invited us into their sitting-room. We were immediately offered drinks. We learned that this family comes out to the island every weekend, letting the kids run all over. It was interesting to learn about the history of the house itself, which used to be a stable and a pig sty, and of the island and its inhabitants. I was also surprised by how amazed they were by our trip. They had lots of questions and seemed to enjoy looking at some of the photos on the blog.

After chatting with them for a little while, they told us we could use their trampoline. It was an offer we immediately accepted. They then gave us a fantastic snack (a variety of delicious cheeses, crackers, and sliced apples) and Beth, the daughter, introduced us to a great toy. It was basically pair of laser guns and targets that each person would wear. We each had six lives and we would run around shooting each other. The best part was the gun gave your hand an electric shock when you lost a life. When all your lives were lost, the gun went bizzerk, shocking you so much that you had to drop the gun. You cannot imagine how much fun it is to shoot your brother.

Sadly, we had to leave after a few hours. I had gone expecting to talk with adults for a while before leaving, but it ended up being so much more fun and interesting than I expected. - Porter
